Founder, Editor and Outdoor Wear Expert.
‘My name's Neil Summers, I'm from Stockport. I've been writing about menswear and outdoor brands for about 20 years. I'm a PR Manager, magazine editor and jacket enthusiast.’
‘I started a fanzine purely to blag free clothes. That was my motivation. Because I was skint and I couldn't afford nice jackets. And it was also to get into nightclubs and get music for free. So we started this magazine and it sort of snowballed into an actual magazine, Proper Magazine.’
‘We created a brand massively inspired by my past raving, which I used to wear loads of outdoor brands like Sprayway and Mountain Equipment. So it was kind of that psychedelic tinged technical wear thing that is pretty big now. But part of the uniform of going to these sort of late 80s, early 90s dance clubs was wearing technical outdoor clothing, you know, like fleeces and Gore-Tex jackets.’
‘You’d go into a club in January in the snow just wearing a t-shirt. You'd come out after five hours of raving, wet through. You'd get in the back of a transit van with all your mates and you'd have your little survival kit made up of a new sweatshirt, a fleece jacket, 20 B&H cigarettes and a carton of Ribena. So it was technical and preserved life in that respect, but just not up a mountain.’
